If …

If you graduate from the University of Virginia with a degree in mechanical engineering and a 3.7 GPA … you’ve earned a place on my blog.

If you persevere in the sport you love … walking on as a freshman and working hard day-in and day-out even though the odds are long against you that you will ever get a chance to play and your last at-bats were in the middle of May … you’ve earned a place on my blog.

And, if you go 3-for-4 and hit a decisive 2 RBI single in a do-or-die game of the College World Series, sending your underdog University of Virginia Cavaliers to Game 3 against heavily favored Vanderbilt … you know, you’ve earned a place on my blog.

Here’s to you Thomas Woodruff …

“[T]his guy has been as unselfish a team player as you could possibly be for four years. And I really believe that at the most important time you get rewarded for that, and certainly it showed true today. And it worked. We just did enough.” ~ UVa Coach Brian O’Connor

That Thomas Woodruff and the entire team of “Cardiac Cavs” left the Vandy-happy ESPN broadcasters stunned and speechless as the Hoos went on to win 3-0 against “this-team-can’t-lose” Vanderbilt Commodores is simply a bonus.

A tip of the cap to all the Hoos.

I’m hoping for another night of stunned confusion from ESPN.

Because, it’s so nice when ESPN is left with nothing to say.

  1. Congrats to Virginia on the CWS Championship! That was an amazing game, and that play at third base was a highlight for years to come. I think they are the first ACC team to win it all in a long time.

    • Yes … the first ACC team since Wake Forest in 1955! And, the first ever championship for Virginia. I couldn’t be happier for this group of guys and how they persevered through a difficult — and injury-riddled — regular season. I was so pleased by the defense all around the infield through this series, but, you’re right, Kenny Towns’ play at 3rd was phenomenal. I think he has always been a bit underestimated. The Angels took him in the 20th round. I think they’ll discover that they found themselves a player who is should have gone a bit higher!

  2. Congrats to your Cavs, Bloggess. Will you still recognize us “little people” or are you going to gloat? (I suggest gloat, most people have little opportunity to do it). :-)

    • Awww, thank you! It’s a hoo-mazing day in HooVille!

But, lots of revisionist history from some fans today — “We KNEW all along they would win!” I call shenanigans. Even UVa itself sent out an email to season ticket holders before the regular season ended to thank us and to say, “Sorry, no regional or super regional tournament for us this season. See you next season!” So, their own athletic department didn’t even see this coming.

They have a lot of talent but they had a rough road and a tough season — bad weather here meant they played their first month entirely as road games, they dealt with injuries that forced them to cull bodies from the club team just to fill out the roster, they had to make-do. There’s something especially satisfying when a bunch of underdogs showed they had plenty of skills, talent, and heart to prove us all wrong.

But, all these post-midnight games for the past few weeks has about done me in. But, winning sure is fun!

  3. I love it when a post is written before a huge game and then the team discussed and loved within the post wins. Reads like a premonition and a rally cap now. Congratulations!!
